Another day

Monday was a day of travel as we moved from Juneau to Anchorage. The highlight of the day for me was when we flew over the ice field where the glaciers origionate from. It was so interesting to see the ice flowing. From above it looked like a river.

Tuesday we began the day with a slow morning. Some of us did laundry and got Starbucks. Others stayed at the church, slept or hiked the trail right behind the church. We then gathered together go out to earthquake park. We were able to see the soil waves created by the Good Friday Earthquake. We then were able to stop at one of the local churches and see the Easter Totem Pole. We then left for Alaska Children's Services. This organization began as the Jesse Lee Home, a United Methodist orphanage and school for Alaska's children. It is now residential care for many of Alaska's children who's families need assistance. We were able to learn about and tour the spiritual care part of the center. We saw the sweat lodge, the prayer garden, and the totem pole, and the chapel. The story of the totem pole is that before the area around Alaska Children Services was as urban, a horse named Lonsome Louie, used to come and visit the children. I guess he would stick his head in the windows and let the children pet him. At the Alaska Children Services campus we listened to Charlie and Della speak about native culture in Alaska. Charlie spoke about whaling and Della taught us how to make a doll our of a summer coat.

Over all it was a great day, but I missed my girls. I wish they were here with me. I am ready to go home and see them. Catherine and Elizabeth I hope you enjoy all the pictures. I love you both, and miss you very much.
